Sleep Apnea Treatment
in Cherry Hill, Princeton & Trenton, New Jersey
If you are diagnosed with sleep apnea after careful observation of your sleep habits and breathing obstruction causes, Dr. Douglas and her New Jersey sleep apnea team will create a custom treatment plan designed to help you find relief from the intrusive symptoms of sleep apnea.
The treatment of sleep apnea is not a simple problem/solution discipline where the patient is “cured” of the condition. Successful treatment requires highly personalized solutions and may include a strategic combination of solution elements. Once the cause of the airway obstruction is determined – whether it be allergies, a deviated septum, enlarged tonsils, tongue, or adenoids, or excess fat below the throat lining – Dr. Douglas is then able to treat your condition with the methods she believes will deliver relief.Treatments for sleep apnea may include:
- Weight reduction
- Limiting use of alcohol
- Other behavior modification
- Nasal CPAP with nasal pillows or masks
- Surgical straightening of the septum
- Diathermy palatal reduction surgery
- Tonsil/adenoid removal
- Surgical removal of the uvula
- Palatal implants
- Dental devices
- Mouthpieces
- Nasal strips
- Genioglossus and hyoid advancement surgery (prevents throat collapse and pulls the tongue muscles forward)
- Sleep position training
- Pharmacological agents
The Nasal CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) is our most popular treatment choice; it works to prevent airway collapse by encouraging positive airflow through the nostrils. The nasal mask is worn overnight and is available in three types:
The Standard CPAP: Sends a fixed pressure of air to prevent airway collapse.
The Bi-Level CPAP: Delivers two variant pressures of air to prevent airway collapse – one used during inhalation, and the other used during exhalation.
The Smart CPAP: Delivers automatically adjusted air pressures based on your breathing patterns.
Dr. Douglas also offers a variety of oral appliances that can be customized to fit your breathing needs. Your recommended treatment program will depend on the results of your physical evaluation and sleep study results. Learn more about sleep apnea treatment options during your free snoring evaluation.
