What is the difference between a white filling and a crown?
The area of decay treated is usually much smaller with a filling than a crown. Crowns are placed to strengthen a tooth after injury or decay, and affect the tooth at the structural level. Fillings are less invasive and are used to treat mild – medium areas of decay. Crowns are also a more expensive option than fillings.
Will fillings need to be replaced after a certain number of years?
White fillings are designed to be durable and withstand the normal pressures of eating and daily activities. However, like anything else, they will wear out over time and need replacement. Will white fillings prevent cavities?
In areas of enamel that are filled, cavities cannot develop or feed off of the man-made filling material. However, a filling cannot stop areas of bacteria from forming on other areas of the tooth. You will still be responsible for initiating good home care habits with filled teeth in addition to all other teeth, gums and the tongue.
